Writing online or offline?
Jul 1st, 2007 by Hans De Keulenaer
A challenge for bloggers is to make an original contribution, and avoid being a mirror of what’s already posted elsewhere. Offline writing can help bloggers meet this aim.
The choice online/offline is a matter of personal preference, but also depends on the type of article:
- Speedlinking is best done online
- Short posts can be written online, though they may benefit from offline drafting, followed by a day of reflection
- Longer articles need to be planned, written in draft, left to mature, and launched when ready
The choice online/offline is not ‘either/or’ but ‘and’. A few ideas for a working method:
- Julie Bonner’s idea of the blog binder. Always carry a map of draft articles and printed articles from other blogs, for inspiration
- Online versus offline? The secret is in the mix. Decide what works best for you
- Write articles in parallel
- Sometimes, write out the article in one step. Sometimes, note down a subject, with only a few paragraphs
- Revisit an article a couple of times. Do not rush to publish
- Use a different pen color for each visit to the article. Use red for the last iteration (writing is deleting)
- Use a quality notepad (e.g. Moleskine)
Does above apply to comments as well as to posts?
